As we get ever closer to Wednesday’s AFCON quarter-finals between Nigeria and South Africa, Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rhor has revealed that his opponents are the favorites.
Rhor who was speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday in Cairo revealed that he was expecting a very entertaining match.
“When you beat a good team of Egypt in these circumstances you will be full of confidence. When you the beat the favorites, you are favorites yourself. We also had a good game against Cameroon and I expect a good match. The strength of our team is the fighting spirit. We are confident despite it is not going to be easy and for me they are the favorites. I don’t play mind games but I’m realistic. South Africa had a good game against Egypt, they played here and know the city and stadium, but I think we will be ready.”
Nigeria defeated Cameroon in the round of 16, coming from 2-1 down to winning 3-2 thanks to a brace from Odion Ighalo and Alex Chuka Iwobi and Rhor believes that the mental strength of the Super Eagles will play a big role on Wednesday.
‘We have mental strength that we have shown against Cameroon, and my team is more mature now. We are highly motivated and we need to find a good strategy. It is a match between two organized teams that know each other well.’
Wednesday’s clash between Nigeria and South Africa will be the 3rd time both countries are meeting at the AFCON with Nigeria winning both.
The 1st meeting was at the semi finals of the 2000 tournament hosted in Nigeria with the Super Eagles winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from Tijani Babangida.
Four year later they met in the group stages in Tunisia with Nigeria wining 4-0.
