Fresh from resigning for hometown club Heartland FC Super Eagles goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa is looking to make ‘a huge impact’ for the team in the coming 2019-2020 NPFL season.
Speaking exclusively to DiegwuSports, Ezenwa believes disclosed that the fact that the club is based in Owerri played a massive role in his decision to join the team.
‘First of all, there is no place like home. I know almost everyone here, this is where I made my mark in the game. So when I was approached by the management, it was going to be very hard to say no.’ Ezenwa told DiegwuSports.
Another reason which promoted the Super Eagles goal keeper to make the switch is the fact that his family is based in Owerri. Ezenwa believes staying close to them is very important for him.
“It’s been tough for me, always being away from my family. I have always desired to be close to them. This also played a key role in my decision to rejoin Heartland FC.”
Ezenwa was with the Naze Millionaires for three years after joining them from Ocean Boys in 2008.In his first spell at the Owerri Club,Ezenwa was on the squad that played in the final of the 2010 CAF Champions league.
However, the Owerri based club has been on a decline ever since the 2010 season and when asked whether he joined Heartland because of the money, Ezenwa was quick to reject the notion, insisting that he is here to make an impact.
“Not at all. The club has real ambitions of returning to the summit of Nigerian Football especially with the new governor and new coach. I want to be part of the New Heartland History. I will do my best to make an impact during the upcoming season.”
Since leaving Heartland in 2011, Ezenwa has had successful stints with a handful of other NPFL teams including Sunshine Stars, FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Enyimba before lately pitching tent with Katsina United where he was all through last season.
Despite failing to get a move abroad, Ezenwa has consistently been a part of the Nigeria national team set-up; making it to the last Fifa World Cup in Russia and also the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations where he was in action in the final group game against Madagascar.
