Substitute Samson Paul scored a beautiful free kick to rescue a point for Abia Warriors as they drew 1-1 at the Umuahia Township Stadium to the disappointment of their fans.

Oche Salifu had given the visitors the lead in the 51st minute with a well taken strike from outside the area in a match that was relatively bereaved of goal scoring chances until the opener.

The match itself started with little or no chances in the opening minutes as both teams struggled to hold on possession in a very dry and hard turf of the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Ibrahim Olowoyin had the best chance of the half when his long range effort narrowly missed the target with Plateau United goal keeper David Obiozor well beaten.

The 2nd half proved to be a different scenario as Abia Warriors came out with more intent and created a few half chances but it was Plateau United that got the opener in the 51st minute against the run of play when Godwin Obaje flicked a Mohamed Zulkifilu cross on to the path of Oche Salifu who made no mistake with his strike.

Abia Warriors responded with waves of attacks but with little shots on target until the 67th minute when Paul Samson scores a sublime free kick to the delight of the few home fans that turned out for the match.

The Warriors pushed for a winner but was unable to get one and it ended in a draw with both teams still in the relegation zone in Group B.

What the Managers had to say:

Adenrele Adewumi:

We have to do more, we have to brace up ourselves and work harder. Every game is tough but we have to keep believing.

Unfortunately the registration is closed, we tried to get a good striker but unfortunately we couldn’t. Scoring is the problem for us. We play very good football but scoring is the problem.

Abdul Maikaba:

In as much as we got the draw I am not satisfied with my players performance because this is a game we should have taken all three points. However, I praise them for getting a point from such a poor pitch which was unplayable. However, I am optimistic we can still make turn around the situation in the second round and make the championship playoffs.
