Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has praised his team’s mental strength after their 2-1 defeat of South Africa in the quarter finals of the 2019 AFCON.
Rohr who was speaking at the post match press conference in Cairo also praised the atmosphere and tempo of the two teams during the encounter.
‘It was a great match. South Africa is a very good team, they had a very good game against Egypt but it’s too difficult to do this two times in a row. We were lucky to score in the last minute, but yet we were mentally strong to do this. I salute South Africa for having a great team. What was the best today is the great spirit between both teams. Our next game is going to be more difficult, but we will be ready.’
Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat of South Africa was Nigeria’s first win over Bafana Bafana in nearly ten years and the Franco-German tactician was full of praise for his defeated opponents.
‘We knew we would face a strong team that knocked out the hosts. We were very lucky tonight. We are now in the semifinal and we are very happy. We have nothing but respect for South Africa.’
Samuel Chukwueze had given Nigeria the lead in the 1st half before Bungani Zungu equalized for South Africa late in the 2nd half.
However it was the Super Eagles who had the last laugh as center back Williams Troost-Ekong scored in the 90th minute to send Nigeria into the semi-finals.
Nigeria will face the winner between la Cote d’Ivoire and Algeria on Sunday by 8 pm at the Cairo International Stadium.
