Nanka town in recent years have earned a reputation to be a football loving town as it has been the hosts of the Anambra State FA Cup Final since 2012. The same year, Nanka also hosted the pre tournament camping of the National Men’s U17 team, The Golden Eaglets ahead of the 2013 Africa Cadet Championships.

It has also gained popularity among NPFL clubs who have used Nanka for their annual Pre-Season camping especially since the opening if the NEROS Stadium.

Most recently, Nanka was also on the international map as Crotone striker Simeon Nwankwo was selected to represent Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. An achievement which Akonam believes will inspire the young generation of Nanka youth.

‘Simmy’s exploits last year was a real breakthrough for the community. It has given a lot of believe to the young ones that they can make it professionally. So a tournament like this can be an avenue to discover the next SIMMY. So the players are not taking it lightly.’
