Exclusive: Anaemena Confident Enyimba will challenge for Champions League

  • Praises club on new signings
  • Backs Afelokhai to become Eagles number one.

As we gradually edge closer to the 2019-2020 Nigeria Proffesional Football League season, Enyimba defender Ifeanyi Anaemena is confident the current champions can retain its title.

Anaemena who spoke to DiegwuSports believes that the success of last season will motivate the team towards achieving more.

“Last season was wonderful, winning the league was awesome and we are going to do everything to win it again this season. We are capable to do that this season because we have done it before.”

The hardtackling center back who played every single match for the People’s Elephant during the Post season Super 6 where the NPFL giants emerged champions, is so far happy with the teams preparation for the season and is confident he and his teammates can cope with the fixture congestion.

“So far, the club has done well in preparing us for the upcoming season. They’ve brought in quality addition to the team and with the experience of the older players, I am sure we can have a great season.”

Enyimba’s season is well underway with the club already playing two matches in the CAF Champions League. A tournament Anaemena disclosed that he would love to add to his trophy cabinet.

“Offcourse we want win the Champions League, if not we wouldn’t register for it. Personally, it is the one trophy I have not won since I joined Enyimba and I would love to win win it.

“However, it’s going to be tough, however we would fight hard to win it. We also need some luck to do that but we will give our all to win the Champions League. “

The last time Enyimba played in the continent was in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup where the People’s Elephant reached the last eight losing to eventual winners Raja Casablanca. Anaemena believes that the club has learnt it’s lessons from the disappointment of 2018.

“It was tough kissing out the way we did. Especially losing at home in the first leg. This season we are going to try to win all out home matches and make life difficult for our opponents. We have also learnt a lot from 2018 and we will try to implement them this year.”

Enyimba has arguably been the most consistent teams in the NPFL which has led to a few of its players getting call ups to the various national teams. The latest to get that call up is goal keeper Theophilus Afelokhai and Anaemena believes that the wonder keeper has all it takes to become Eagles number one.

“He is buy far the best goal keeper in the NPFL and I candy he is the best in Nigeria. I am not surprised he has been called up. I think if given the chance he can go on to become the first choice keeper for our country.”

Enyimba will be aiming to become the 1st team to win the league in a row since Kano Pillars in 2014.
