Rangers International Head coach Benedict Ugwu has praised his ‘hardworking boys’ for their victory over AS Pelican of Gabon in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday at Enugu.
Rangers came from a goal down to defeat AS Pelican 3-1 and 4-3 on aggregate and coach Ugwu has attributed the win to the determination and discipline if his players.
‘I want to congratulate my boys for their hardwork today. They showed a lot of character and discipline especially after we went a goal down. They should be proud of their performance.’ Ugwu to DiegwuSports.
Rangers slumped to an early lead after AS Pelican scored a free-kick in the 5th minute from Dertin Amores before the Flying Antelopes scored three unreplied goals from Ifeanyi George, Nnamdi Egbuhor and Ibrahim Olawoyin to win the tie.
However, the Rangers coach revealed he was never bothered even when his team where a goal down.
‘I never doubted our ability to qualify. I always knew that we had the quality to defeat our opponents (who by the way are very good). It was unfortunate that we conceded from a spot kick but like I said earlier, our boys worked hard and showed plenty of determination to come back and win the match.’
Rangers have now qualified for the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season and will be aiming to qualify for the group stages for the 2nd time in as many seasons.
