Following Nigeria’s comeback win over Ecuador on Tuesday, Head coach Manu Garba has praised his team for its resilience and mental strength. Garba who spoke exclusively to DiegwuSports after the Golden Eaglets defeated their Ecuadorian opponents also promised that the team will work on its defensive lapses before the knockout stages.
‘First of all I want to praise the boys today for their never say die attitude and mental strength. Today we were up a highly technical side who also were also physically good so I want to praise my boys for pushing till the end. I am very proud of them.
‘With the way we are going, it means we just have to work on our defensive lapses which is more of lack of concentration but I am sure we will correct it by the time we get to the knockout stages’ Garba told DiegwuSports.
Sa’id Mohammed gave Nigeria and early lead in the 5th minute as goalkeeper Lopez made a hash of an attempted pass to his defender. An alert Sa’id intercepted and slotted past Lopez from outside the box.
However the lead lasted just five minutes as Mejia equalized for Ecuador before Johan Mina scored from the penalty sport to give the South Americans the lead in the 55th minute.
Once again the Golden Eaglets pulled off another late come back to win the match with Sa’id Mohammed scoring twice.
The win mean that Nigeria are through to the last 16 with a match to spare but coach Manu Garba has ruled out taking the last match against Hungary for granted.
‘We are going to approach that match with a winning mentality. We want to keep the confidence high and also qualify top of the group. So we will remain focused for Hungary who are a good team.’
