It was another exciting weekend as our Naija stars performed in various leagues across Europe.
From England where Odion Ighalo continued his sensational goal scoring record for Manchester United to Germany where Antony Ujah finally scored for Union Berlin as the Bundesliga came to an end, here is a brand new edition of Eagles In The Diaspora.
Ujah Finally Scores
We start in Germany, where Anthony Ujah ended his 15- game goal drought as Union Berlin thrashed Fortuna Dusseldorf 3-0 in their final Bundesliga game of the season at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday afternoon.
Ujah last scored for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga 2-1 home win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, November 23, 2019.
Ujah opened scoring for the home team in the 26th minute after he was set up by Joshua Mees.
The Nigeria forward later set up Christian Gentner for Union Berlin’s second goal of the game six minutes before the hour mark.
Ujah netted three times in 24 appearances for his club during the 2019/20 campaign.
The 29-year-old was replaced by his compatriot Suleiman Abdullahi in the 62nd minute.
Abdullahi scored the third goal in the 90th minute.
It was Abdullahi’s first ever Bundesliga goal for the club.
Still in Germany and Jamilu Collins featured in Paderborn’s final fixture of the 2019/2020 Bundesliga season which they lost 3-2 away to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Collins played for 90 minutes in the game which was his 30th Bundesliga appearance for relegated Paderborn.
It was Paderborn’s fourth straight defeat which saw them winless in their last 15 games of the season (10 defeats, five draws).
They finish bottom on 20 points in the 18-team league table.
Super Eagles’ new invitee Kingsley Ehizibue saw action for 90 minutes but could not prevent FC Cologne from getting hammered 6-1 away to Werder Bremen.
The game was Ehizibue’s 31st league outing for Cologne who ended in 14th on 36 points in the final standing and did not win any of their last 10 games (four draws and six defeats).
And in another final day fixture, Noah-Joel Sarenren-Bazee was on the losing side as Augsburg lost 2-1 at home to RB Leipzig.
Sarenren-Bazee was brought on with five minutes left in the game which was his ninth appearance in the Bundesliga scoring one goal.
Augsburg will feature in the German top flight next season after finishing 15th on 36 points despite failing to win their last three games.
Odion Strikes Again As United Move Into FA Cup Semis
In England, Odion Ighalo was on target as Manchester United defeated 10-man Norwich City 2-1 after extra-time to progress into Emirates FA Cup semi-final.
It was Ighalo’s third goal in his second appearance in the Emirates FA Cup for United this season.
Ighalo broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, stabbing the ball past Tim Krul from close range after Luke Shaw’s cross was deflected towards him.
The former Watford, Udinese and Grenada forward has now scored five goals in four starts for Manchester United since he joined them in January and its only a matter of time before he becomes a first team regular.
Over to the Championship, Leon Balogun sat out Wigan Athletic’s 2-0 home win against Blackburn Rovers at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The center-back who missed last weekend’s 2-0 away win against Huddersfield Town through injury featured in Tuesday’s friendly against Fleetwood.
Balogun has featured in six Sky Bet Championship games for the Latics since his arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion in January.
Nigerian-born defender Tosin Adarabioyo played the entire duration of the game for Blackburn Rovers.
At the Valley, Eberechi Eze put up a fine performance in Queens Park Rangers’ 1-0 loss Charlton Athletic.
His companion, Bright Osayi-Samuel was also in action for the visitors.
Eze played on the left-wing for QPR, while Osayi-Samuel was deployed on the right-wing.
Eze, who featured for the entirety of the contest has now played 40 matches in this campaign for QPR across all competitions, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists.
Osayi-Samuel played for 71 minutes before he was replaced by Aramide Oteh.
In another game, Ovie Ejaria played for 82 minutes in Reading’s 2-1 away defeat at Derby County.
The midfielder was replaced by Kenyan forward Ayub Masika.
Ejaria has scored thrice in 34 league games for the Royals this season.
Leganes Inconsistency Continues
In Spain, Chidozie Awaziem was in action while Kenneth Omeruo was benched in relegation-threatened Leganes’ 2-1 away defeat at Osasuna in Saturday’s LaLiga clash.
Awaziem, making his 22nd league appearance of the season, was in the starting eleven before he was replaced in the 46th minute.
Enric Gallego opened scoring for Osasuna on nine minutes but Javier Aviles drew Leganes level on 50 minutes.
And in the 96th minute Gallego netted the winner to secure the three points for Osasuna.
Leganes are now winless in five consecutive games (three defeats and two draws) since football returned in Spain.
They are in the drop zone in 19th position on 25 points, seven points from safety.
And in the Serie A, Ola Aina featured for Torino who lost 4-2 away to Cagliari.
Aina was replaced with 16 minutes left in the encounter which was Aina’s 23rd of the season for Torino.
The defeat to Cagliari leaves Torino in 14th position on 31 points and are six points away from the relegation spot.
